I agree with the writer of this news article about USPS Christmas Mailings...I never knew that you're supposed to print address labels in all capital letters. Did you?

But then again, the USPS wants us to eliminate commas and periods, too, which most of us who took "Keyboarding 101" knows is incorrect.

If you use the Zip +4 tool on the USPS website, it gives you their preferred format, abbreviations, etc. All caps, no punctuation. I assume this helps their automated reader machines. I do some mass mailings and have set up my mail-merge address labels to use their preferences. Hand-written envelopes, not so careful.

I knew about the punctuation, but not the all caps. I recently had a postal person give me stress over the zip+4 I had on something. She crossed it out and put just the zip, saying the +4 isn't important and may confuse the sorting machines.

Uhuh...

Yes. all caps and no punctuation -- it's been that way for years.

I did not know about the all caps for domestic. I did know that international mail requires all caps--at least that is what the local postmaster told me. I had to white out an address and re-do it in all caps to Canada.

I wonder if their machine reads script? Probably it just spits them out of the normal stream to a manual read station.

When I sell on ebay I print from their shipping labels. I've noticed it uses the same information as the buyer entered when signing up. You would think ebay would have written code to make it all caps to conform to USPS standards.

I wonder if the script Ma uses is why here packages always seem to take longer than usual to get up to my sister in NH!
