Lithograving

The hoops are there for a number of reasons. The materials are in storage and time is required to transport to the viewing site. More important though, is that some philatelic archived materials are very valuable like this sheet:

Precautions are essential.

As mentioned some items have been digitized.

For example, several essays of the 1959 Battle of Abraham stamp can be seen on the Canadian Postal Archives site:

http://data4.collectionscanada.ca/n...=POST&p=1&u=http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/020117/020117030113_e.html&r=1&f=G&SECT3=POST

Click on "Documents related to this stamp". There are 57 Records.

I think the archives could do a better job digitizing its philatelic holdings. This is something philatelic organizations such as BNAPS or the Royal could get involved with.

A few years ago, a collector donated his county collection to our local museum. Unfortunately several pieces have been stolen. This is the danger in allowing access to holdings. If people are allowed to look there should be adequate security measures in place to prevent thefts.

OK lorddenning, I understand the part about security especially
when it concerns items like the Seaway invert.

Particularly nowadays when there are thefts of irreplaceable
items from major libraries, archives, museaums etc.

Besides even though I do like visiting Ottawa once in awhile I
necessarily don't want to go there just to check out some stamps.

Therefore they should as you mention get on with the job
of digitizing many/most/all? items.

The technology is there and I'm sure the funds could be found.

I agree that the Archives could do a better job but....it takes money, time and people to do the work.

What makes you think that either BNAPS or the RPSC could (or should) get involved in the project? We have enough difficulty getting volunteers to contribute time and effort to run our own organizations without even thinking of handling the archives.

Both BNAPS and the RPSC are doing good work within their own respective philatelic communities. I am proud to be a member of both organizations and applaud each for its contribution to the hobby. I would encourage every member of this forum to join either or both of these fine organizations (applications are online) and get involved in the hobby at a different level.

I live in Winnipeg (Kas's hometown) and bought a lot from him first hand, including a set of 4 matched plate blocks of the 929i. Unfortunately my collecting interests have changed and I am now parting with my Kas stuff and actually sold my PB's about a month ago. This green variety I never saw in his collection and I would guess it is a forgery (although I cannot be sure). The set I owned was the brown background variety and to this day is the most stark example of it I've ever seen. Sadly, it is worth a lot less then back when it was a hot commodity and so I only got $250 for the set but such is "investing" in stamps.

Be VERY wary of buying things because some dealer in a far away land says it was a Kas item, although many are as his and his family's collection (his brother and nephew had amazing collections as well) were very large.

I have quite a bit of Kas material I hope to sell over the next few years to focus on my current interests but I knoe it won't sell for near what I paid. Oh well!
