I am so close to finishing a complete mint collection of airmails to 1940. But no, just as I am going to make it out they pull me back in. I have been offered a chance at a 10 volume Scott Airpost World set to the year 1961.

I just can not resist so the whole collection will be transferred from Vario pages to the Scott albums. So which mounts would look better? So far I have used Showguard black mounts which really make the stamps pop out. But I think the clear mounts might look better in the Scott albums because of the way the album is laid out. Opinions would be very welcome to put together this collection.

Here's an idea of how they might look in clear mounts...

I'm not familiar with the Airpost World album's page layout but this shows black mounts on a National page (cropped).

Actually, I went from black to clear.

I don't have a page of Air Post available to show, so this will have to do.

I think each each has their merits.

Black Mounts- for the presentation.

Clear Mounts- focus on the stamps themselves.

Also, since they are really not noticed, the clear mount is much more forgiving if not prefectly presented or cut.

Several years ago, I was able to purchase a 2-volume 1942 edition of the International Air Post Album. The pages were as thin as onion skin and the two-post construction was just too cumbersome to work with. Pages don't lay flat & difficult to remove and re-assemble. I also did not want to be limited by what Scott thought should be collected.

So, I designed my own pages for my World Airmail collection. I only collect to 1950, so my album only consists of 8 each 2" binders (about 1,200 pages).

But I decided early on to settle on the black background, and I have never regretted that decision. You are right, it does make the stamps 'pop' from the page. It also clearly shows the perforation varieties (roulette, pin-perf, imperf, etc). Additionally, you will never be able to properly display the different perfin varieties without a black background.

Well I am starting to see a trend towards the black background mounts. And I do still have about 30 lbs of black showgaurds purchased for other collections. Will wait it out some more but we may have a winner.

Barhata those pages are some very nicely designed airs. Thanks for posting them.

Hi barhhata,

I like your pages very much. You have clearly devoted much time to their layout, writing up and presentation. I am also in the process of designing my own page layouts as I do not collect every issue, or every stamp in an issue, and I found your pages most inspirational. I do find the black mounts preferable to the clear type, though feel they are just a bit overpowering on the page. Nicely done though.

Terry

Hi 1775mac,

Since posting to barhata I have remembered seeing some time back that Hawid produced (and maybe still do produce) grey backed stamp mounts in strips and cts. These appeal to me as they would provide the necessary contrast to show off stamp margins and perforations without being as overpowering visually on the page as the black backed mounts. I will contact UK suppliers and Hawid after the holiday to see if they are still obtainable. If anyone here knows of a US supplier that has them and is willing to ship to the UK, contact information would be most appreciated.

Thankyou,
Terry
