There is probably no defined criteria for double overprint. I guess this one stuck somewhere in between.

Very interesting. Is that extra period supposed to be there (between the A and L)?

If it's a true double overprint, wouldn't both be black? Or at least, much closer to the same color?

Hmmm, good question. I was so occupied with double overprint, and missed that extra dot completely. It looks like that this dot is on the faint impression too. My other copy of this stamp does not have that dot. My Scott Standard does not list any varieties for this series at all.

I guess that what is I'm trying to find out.

I think that it is a double print.

The first printing was low on ink, so they re-ran it.

Maybe the overprint is just hovering over the stamps and it's casting a shadow, then again, maybe not.

Definite Dbl. This doesn't have to be caused by 2 seperate strikes - odd things like a paper bounce through a press or if done by hand just rocking or added pressure can cause these. I was just looking at Hawaii and they have 3 levels of Double Ovpts for the provisionals being light, medium and heavy. As for the extra dot thats interesting and not just a little blemish but looks like a full period.

An interesting stamp. The dot between the 'A' and 'L' seems to have the ghosting but the dot after the 'S' doesn't. The ghosting on the 'S' seems to be there but partly obscured by the design of the stamp.

I have three copies of this stamp, one with a different tone and one with no dot after the 'S'.
