Differences between QV portraits Die I and Die II.
Illustrated examples please

Thanks for your comments , I should be more specific! Its the QV portraits on St Lucia 1883-1891... I need detailed differences...preferably illustrated so I can compare. Thanks CF

Welcome CE. You'll have to be more specific. What country? What year? What issue?

I'll hazard a guess.
Are you referring to the Canada 1898-1902 issue?
2c #77 Die I - Frame is made up of four thin lines
#77a Die II - Frame is made up of one thick line between two thin lines

I assume you are referring to the Great Britain 5d QV Stamp ?

If so, here is a type 1

Type 2

The difference between the Two is the marking to the right of the letter "d". Type 2 has dashes instead of Dots

Any Penny Black or Penny Red Imperf is an example of DIE ONE.
Any line-engraved 1d or 2d with letters in all corners is an example of DIE TWO.

Ahem, jamesw, the Victorian key type, just as I suspected.

I hesitate to cut and paste straight out of Gibbons or Scott, but both have nice illustrations of the differences, found in the front of the catalogue.

The easiest difference is the vertical line at the front of the throat. On Die I it stops at the sixth horizontal line of shading, and on Die II it stops at the eighth horizontal line of shading.

There are hair and crown differences, too. Someone should create a pictorial comparison, using actual stamps. Perhaps along the lines of the KGV die differences I posted a while back. Any takers?

[edit: I see they've posted it themselves, as a part of a Linn's Refresher Course, found here...

http://www.linns.com/howto/refreshe...rcourse.aspx

This Course focuses on the throat line out of the differences set out in the catalogue.

Also, Gibbons and Scott differ on the spotting features they use for the two dies. The more, the better, as far as I'm concerned, because cancels are often covering up one or two or three features.]

Hmm. I considered myself enlightened. Guess I was still standing inside the barn.

Maybe we should ALL edit our posts to show we knew all along it was St Lucia that was being asked for!

Actually...I did help! In my head I said, "I hope he sorts this out soon" It was telepathic motivation, and obviously it worked.

The De La Rue key types occur across the colonies, so the identification of the dies is not specific to St. Lucia.

But the identification is applicable across many of the colonies, including St. Lucia.

Many thanks everyone for your help – particularly Cjd. Also nice to know that we managed to shed some enlightenment on jamesw in the process.
