I found this item in my collection, and the Scott catalog says that if the spacing from the 1/2 to the Peni is 2mm, then it is worth more (Scott 8a). Mine is actually 2mm. However, my Scott fails to tell me the normal spacing. Any help?

My S.G. catalog (with overprint illustrated) has 2mm as being the normal.

Quote: a."½" and "P" spaced (all stamps in 8th vertical row)

Does that mean the "P" should be under the space between the "N" and "I" ?

Ah...now I see that this refers to the STAMP position in that every stamp in the 8th vertical COLUMN (the word ROW confused me) has the wide-spaced overprint. See block blow:

Left hand "spaced".......... right hand normal

Scott Classic depicts the actual stamp, and not just a reproduction of the overprint. I think SG depicts the same overprint that you have depicted above, and Scott is depicting a stamp with a closer spacing/smaller gap between the fraction and the P.

The P is almost directly under the N, and the I of PENI pretty much points up to the gap between the L and the A.

I'll try to dig out a couple examples and scan them.

SG is not as clear as it could be. I took their reference to '8th vertical row' to mean that this setting appears on all stamps in the 8th vertical row on a sheet, but that was just a guess.

Scotzm. Excellent block showing both examples. So it appears that the 8th vertical column has the larger spacing and that my copy is one of those few. Thanks for the excellent help.
