I am looking for any kind of book on John W. Nicklin or related information on him. Related topics might be about his business or the ASDA shows he attended. Putting together a exhibit next Winter but much more information on his life or stamp designs are needed.

Seems a bit odd that John Apfelbaum would write an article trashing Nicklin. After all, the Apfelbaum family name and corporation took a major hit when John Apfelbaum pled guilty to bid-rigging in 2002.
What Nicklin did was nothing compared to what John Apfelbaum and his firm did.
If you want to find out more about Nicklin, I would be hard pressed to consider Apfelbaum's "blog" as either reliable or unbiased. |

Agreed, there doesn't seem to be much online or a single site that has his info concisely compiled in one spot.
The first 2 sentences of Apfelbaum's blog is accurate; as well as the 1st sentence in the 2nd paragraph.
He was one of the editors of "The Historical Air Mail Catalogue an Authoritive Catalogue of Air Mail Stamps and Historical Covers 1930".
He wrote "Fabulous Stamps: The Romance of the Rarities". I don't have that book, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the claims Apfelbaum made were from that book. Unfortunately, Apfelbaum does not provide citations for Nicklin's biography.
I'm not sure which years he was editor of the Scott catalog.
He did edit stamp albums, including the Nicklin 1934 Air Mail Stamp Album, printed by Grosset and Dunlap.
Bibliographies also list citations in various older journals, none of which I have access to and do not appear to be available online.
Again, I'm guessing the biography Apfelbaum mentions is probably in one of Nicklin's books, maybe?
Sorry I couldn't have been of more help. |

I have a U.S. album edited by Nicklin. It has a dark blue cover, and is bound like a book. The printed pages end in 1935. The publisher is Grosset & Dunlap, with notes by The Nicklin Company, 110 West 42nd Street, New York. It also includes U.S. revenues, Canal Zone, Cuba, Guam, Porto (sic) Rico, and the Philippine Islands. It has 5 copyrights listed, 1932 through 1936. It is unusual in the respect that all the stamp-mounting spaces are on the right-hand side of the opened pages, while the left-hand side contains catalog numbers and valuations in the format: #7 1c Blue...........Franklin.............$8.00 $3.50
The album has 138 pages, and the final pages advertise such items as (1) The Worldwide Stamp Album; (2) United States Album Loose Leaf Editions; (3) The Air Mail Album; and (4) decorations such as flags and "aeroplanes" -- I have never seen the "aeroplanes" stuck in an old album; they come in a set of 84. Email me for more information. |

If it's of any help, I found an obscure bibliography referencing John W. Nicklin having been born in 1894 and died in 1973. |

For all thank you for the help, as you see finding much of anything on him is going to be tedious. Wt1 the dates do help on his birth and death. Some that I am focusing on is his designs of the ASDA show labels that he produced. He also designed various ones for Liberia, but I am not including this side so far. |

I did find in a Google search a "snippet" reference to his obituary that was apparently carried in the Scott Monthly Journal, Volume 54, Page 84, dated 1973 (if you can find a copy someplace). |

Google search for Brian Birch's Biographies of Philatelists (it's about a 2500 page pdf file). He should be listed in it with references to his obit. |

"Negus" are the Negus brothers who had large clipping files on philatelists. At the end of the file under Negus(2) and Negus(3), you'll see references to the clippings that the Negus' had. Likely obits in various publications.
You can also ask the APRL for a copy of the page from that CCP issue as well as anything in the Negus files.
Also, you can contact the ASDA and see if they have any material on him.
Hope that helps. |
