Hi, I came into a set of stamps that puzzle me. They are apparently from an Arabian country. Identifying marks are:
The denomination is in a capital "P" At the top of the stamps there is a lion facing a lioness, both laying down. The only word I can deciper is "Postes"
In my review, my best guess is they are from Iran, but I can't locate them in the catalog.
Any ideas?
Oh, me and photobucket are at odds. Otherwise I would send pics.
Thank you! Mobilman44

Doesn't sound like Iran. They have one lion holding a sword as the national emblem and no "P" denominations.
Could be Lebanon maybe? Is it an old stamp?
By the way you can upload images direct to the site, without Photobucket. |

Hi, I'm on vacation now, so don't have access to the stamps. Given the collection they were with, they should be pre 1950, but I can't be certain. |

PUZZLE SOLVED !
With a little pride and a whole lot of embarrassment, I am announcing the answer to the identity of the mystery stamps..........
After being away from them for awhile, I took a fresh look at them - again with a 10x magnifier. What hit me in the face was that the fancy filigree decorations were really English writing. In the bottom left - what to the naked eye looks like fancy line work, really spells out "Libanese"! So I pulled the Lebanon catalog and there they were - Scott #s 139, 140, and 141 - plus some of the same with overprints.
Like I said, I'm embarrassed I didn't see this before, but it was an easy miss........
Thanks all! |

Aha - I thought it might be because Lebanon was a French colony, and I think their only one in that part of the world. Hence why "Postes" being on the stamp was a clue. |
