I've been keeping my eye out for good deals on high grade copies of this set for some time. This one came up for auction this week, and I decided I had to have it.

However, I can't help but wonder if I missed something on this one. I purchased it for only 20% of the 2013 Unitrade cat value for VF. This one is easily XF+ Jumbo and should have sold for much, much more than what I got it for.

Thoughts?

Brian

It appears to have sizeable gum thins. Clearly, removing the hinge took small portions of the stamp with it. Also, to my eye, a possibility of re-perfing on the right side.

I agree with XF centering and extremely nice margins for the issue however the back is a detractor. Still imho this series really doesn't get the interest as many others do. Like the leaf and numeral vics 1-5c get no love but 6-7-8-10-20 are another story. Another good example of patience and smart shopping.

One of the few I'm still missing to complete my unused Canada collection. Nice grab if not too thinned.

Hi Brian. Nice catch. Don't worry too much about the gum. Whether you are buying for your collection or an exhibit, you are only going to show the front. If the gum is detracting, wash it off and be the proud owner of a very fine unused specimen if this stamp. Disposing of the gum might even enhance the market price if you decide to sell!.

Thank you for the kind words. I try to collect never-hinged stamps whenever possible, but this stamp, in this condition, would be way out of my price range for never hinged.

I won't have this stamp in my hands until next week, so will update all on the status of potential thins. However, I really don't think it's thinned. The black background would show through quite prominently if it were. If the seller had described it better, it could have easily sold at or above current catalogue value.

Let's face it, you got a very good deal. I do not see any reperfing.
