I was reading up on sperrati and spiro forgeries of NewFoundland and the one thing that really stuck in my head is to look for " The absence of white" Meaning that the forgeries are not actual full engravings and generally the lines will never be as clean and as crisp as originals. Sort of like re copying over and over. From an essay to a proof to a plate proof to a stamp then to a forgery each time losing a bit of details. Of course side by side can't be beat .
NITROLURES-------Let me look around and see if I can find something on the early NEWFOUNDLAND.I agree with your statement that nothing beats having a side by side comparison, thats missing in a lot of the early books on the subject of forgeries, even many fakes shown on the internet fail to make the side by side reference. Alot of the experts have their own reference copies of originals and the many different types of forgeries in their files to do the matching when presented with stamps to expertize .
