The 1898 documentary dollar values have an elegant classical design.

Do you know why they didn't use regular perfs on the back of the book stamps?

The stamps were used to pay the tax levied on legal documents and business receipts.
These documentary taxes were enacted in 1898 to help pay the cost of the Spanish American War.

Here is an example of the $1 value used on a certificate of deposit.

The cancel reads "MCHTS N. BK. FEB 25 1899 BURL. VT." for Merchants National Bank, Burlington, Vermont.

I wish we still used the classical type of designs ( old folks sigh). I asked the post office if they had "lickem" stamps
so I could send the the packets and they said no, just stickums.....

The $100, $500 and $1000 documentary revenue stamps of 1898 all had serial numbers.
Here is an example of the $100 Marshall.

I think all of my battleship rev's are hand canceled in ink. I don't think they have circular cancels. Very Nice! I have picked up a few revenue stamps from old receipt stock certificate books for a defunct financial instution Land of Lincoln Bank in Springfield IL from the late 1950's to the 1970's.
