Hi --

When I look in online stamp shops sometimes I see stamps with dark (stains?) -- especially on the perforations. I'd like to know if these are safe to buy and add to my collection -- is this just staining that happens -- or is this a sign of mold infestation.

Can you look at these pictures (the only two I could find in my entire collection that showed this staining) and tell me what you think causes these stains and if they are a warning sign as to mold, etc. Thank you!

Then again, it could be what is called "tropical staining" which is actually a fungus that grows in some climates of high humidity. It is characterized by light brown spots on stamps and covers.

If you must clean them, the recommendation is to use regular household Chlorox bleach in lukewarm water using one part bleach to 10 parts water.

Using stamp tongs , dip the stamp into the solution for one minute. Then remove and rinse in clear, fresh water. Dry thoroughly and then mount. If the stamp is mint, this process will of course remove the gum.

Hope this is helpful.

Cheers,
Terry
