Here's an interesting statistic showing the US Postal Service's very minimal share of shipping services provided to the US Government:

Quote:
The Postal Service's share of that pot amounted to $4.8 million, or 1.4 percent. Federal Express led with $190.1 million (56.4 percent), followed by UPS with $138.7 million (41.2 percent).

No wonder the USPS has financial problems if the US Government is shipping materials more competitively via FedEx and UPS!

It would also be interesting to see all the campaign contributions FedEx and UPS gives to various congressmen and how that influences the use of the services. I'm sure the USPS can do it more cost effectively.

Time is MONEY. I'd like to know what proportion of the outlay(s) were wasted on "overnighting" it!

I don't think the Government really cares much. It's illegal for me to get my yearly Social Security Statement that they had originally just started to mail to everyone who has worked a few years ago. I refuse to create a log-in just so I forget what it is 12 months from now and pay for my own printing. Aside from that, what about this e-file? Look how many centers don't handle your taxes anymore, less workers involved, post offices don't stay open late for tax day anymore. So you all can do all that work that others used to do for free. I'm sure there are plenty more examples.

I'm the furthest thing from a 'left wing' guy, but I don't think it's right that bills are allowed to come with giant advertisements to "save a stamp and pay online"(one of mine charges a nice "convenience fee" which costs about 15x more than the stamp), or having these government agencies use competitors than sister agencies.
This all feels very wrong on multiple levels. And they are glaringly obvious examples as well of things that could easily be changed.

I work for Uncle Sam, and when I was in the States, we almost never sent anything USPS other than non-critical, regular letter-sized mail. Anything time-sensitive or of any size we sent FedEx. They're just more timely and reliable.

I was a commercial general contractor. The post office was one of my customers. They were my first customer that accepted bids via fax. They were also my first customer that "required" me to have an email address as that was their preferred method of communication and that was in 1994. 1994 does not sound like that long ago, but in internet terms it is ancient. We joked about them cutting their own throats at the time. They were so arrogant about it they thought they were invinsible. Their big claim to fame at the time is that they were the only branch of the federal government that made a profit.
