Ok im going to list all the possibilities:
Year: 1859 Colour: Black Brown Scott #: 16 CV: $ 5,500 (Used), $ 11,500 (Mint)
Year: 1859 Colour: Red Lilac Scott #: 17a CV: $ 150 (Used), $ 1,100 (Mint)
Year: 1859 Colour: Violet Scott #: 17b CV: $ 140 (Used), $ 1,200 (Mint)
17c and 17d are concerned with imperforates and half used (torn in half and used as 5 cents so not related)

All of these gauge close to 11 3/4
Hope this helps.

Is that a crease going across the stamp?..If so that would reduce the price a bit from the actual catalog value in used condition. If not it would be most likely graded as fine-very fine used. Has nice centering and perfs look good. But then those are prices you would get at an actual stamp auction or a serious collector provided it has a COA..a dealer would definitely talk the price down. |

No it's not a crease. It's the plastic row guard thing on the display card. |

Mindpsyche's listing is a bit skewed and is missing one number, at least according to my 2-year-old Unitrade. What he shows as 17a is actually #17 (red lilac), what he shows as 17b is actually 17a (violet), and missing is 17b, the brown shade, which is the least expensive of all the varieties in used condition. That's most likely what you have, 17b.

Agree with Ryan and there are many that assume the browns are the valuable black brown color which are really hard to find. However although it is very hard to see what is going on behind the cancelation over the princes left shoulder it may be the double epaulette variety. That would turn a $60 cat to $500 (2007cat) . There is definatly lines under the cancel and they do look to be very close to what is shown in catalog. Not sure of a really high res in that location would pull it out more. But I'd like to see maybe a 1200dpi and maybe some color enhancement can see through the cancel. |

Atually did a bit of research on the double epaulette and it is actually a re entry . The pic I have in unitrade shows a squigilly line that almost fits the position under your cancel. However Re entries.com shows it totally different and is listed as a major re entry. Sorry if hopes got to high. |
