So I work at a small hotel north of Toronto and am at the front desk checking people in and out. It's usually pretty calm so I take my stock book and catalogue and kill some time cataloguing and arranging my stamps.

I only have one stock book with a few hundred old stamps as I returned to collecting one month ago.

Anyway, i'm sitting at the desk and this guy in his 50's walks up and checks in. He then looks down and sees my stamps. Then he asked me if I collected stamps, to which I responded that I do.

Then he says, let me show you something. He walks to his suitcase, opens it up and brings out a thick album. It was an almost complete Album of Canadian stamps all in Mint (Well most of them).

He told me he does not go anywhere without his album and that he had lots more stamps (even more than most dealers) at his home.

Flipping through his collection was amazing. For doubles, he had strips and sometimes blocks of 4 and 6 for some stamps (again in mint).

Just so random to meet a fellow collector on the job.

Thought I should share this story, hope I did not waste your time.

That's a really cool story. I meet fellow collectors occasionally but Houston isn't a hotbed of stamp collectors.

Thanks Bill and just like all collectors he was only too keen on showing off his collection :)

By the way, he had like 10 beaver's (not sure of the denominations) and he offered to sell me one for $ 40.00

I politely turned it down :)

Most of us can only think of things like that coming 'out of the blue' but, I am glad to see it did happen to you.

I think that the vast majority of stamps collectors like to talk about our hobby but dont get the chance as often as we would like.

I had a similar experiance with some of my co-workers... I work as a school bus driver and occasionally I fill in at the dispatchers desk on Saturdays... Which is basicly make sure that the 10 or so sports trips get out by 7 am... The rest of the time is just taking trouble calls, if any. So in the few hours lull till I have to leave I work a little on my collection.. Some of my co-workers look at my albums and then ask about stamps in general... Some even have left some stamps for me in my mailbox..
