Hi, I know what perfins are, and I know that there are those who collect them, but I have some WW (European) perfin stamps that I am identifying and putting a value for them in my spreadsheet.

I have always generally avoided buying perfins because I assumed that it detracted from their value and I have seen comments on this forum that seemed to say that as well, but, for stamps that catalogue for 5 - 20 bucks(or so), how much would you adjust for the stamp being a perfin?

I know that I can put any value I want since this is just for me, but I am interested in other's opinion on this. I'm assuming that the perfin is not rare or unusual. thanks, yakboomer.

More to the point is that you're marketing to two classes of buyers; those who collect perfins vs those who don't. Kinfd of like selling a house with a pool - either the buyer wants a pool or doesn't. Installing a pool doesn't add to the price of the house, it differentiates the potential buyers.
I recently sold about 30 auctions, two with perfins. I had no buyers who crossed classes.

As to the price/value, if you start at 99 cents, the market will find the price.

My two cents anyway.

I would agree with Art, there are different collecting disciplines reflected here, and what may be valuable and desirable to a perfin collector may be considered damaged goods to a general stamp collector. Similar comparisons can be drawn to those who specialize in precancels or other specialties.

I would suggest you read this article as a start:

Some may disagree but I regard perfins as varieties. One of my country collections is Newfoundland which issued a limited number of stamps between 1855-1949. I recently acquired a variety of Newfoundland issues perfined (is that a word?) by the Ayre family department store in St. John's. The Ayre family is well-known in the Province (aside from their commercial fame, several members were killed in WWI) and I arranged a page of the perfins which came from several different sets. I wouldn't go out of my way to find every perfin issued by everyone, but interspersing displays with the regular issues as well as good quality covers adds, I think, character and variety to a collection.

Some perfins are rare and important (part of postal history), for example the Hungarian AUT. perfin:

More and more perfin catalogues appear, here`s a promotion file of the Hungarian Perfin catalogue, you`ll see there is a valuation system too (10 points= 0.5 USD):
