An interesting newspaper article posted today in Frankfort, KY that may interest SCF members:

http://www.state-journal.com/spectr...tamps-of-war

While most of the points mentioned are common knowledge, and shortages of most goods occurred because materials were being diverted to the war effort, I don't recall hearing about this tidbit of information before:

Quote:
...the stamp hobby was coping with another problem. Paper companies were having their production and inventories regulated and overseen by the government. Everything in the country that was needed for the war effort was being diverted...soon there were no stamp hinges. It took a tremendous amount of political arm-twisting to get this remedied. Before long the government officials in charge of paper production regulation were convinced that stamp collecting, a hobby that they had earlier approved to continue, should have the stamp hinges needed to do this...

A bit of trivia from yesteryear.

With 20,600,000,000 issued, how long will it take for those graded 100 Win The War stamps to be worth more than 3 cents? :-)

Well, considering that F.D.R. himself was an avid stamp collector and knew that a both the pleasant distraction from war, and the boost in sales of of patriotic stamps, would makes sense! Seems they would also want to get in the presidents and public's good graces as well. win-win! Very interesting wt1!

Interesting article.

One would have to think that even for a package of 1000 hinges, how many trees are involved? I doubt if a small fraction of even one medium sized tree would be involved.

This also puts more fuel to the fire that rationing, for some items anyway, were politically motivated only, not because of scarcity. My parents used to tell me that there was never a food shortage here but you needed the ration stamps nonetheless.
