This question is from Australia's Stamp Variations Writer David Mallen In Australia's Stamp News February Edition 2013.

2000 Australia Emergency Reprint & Overprint International Post Stamp The Very Rare $1 Koala With Postal Worker Angela Thom Image On The Tab In Mint Condition.

These stamps were only for sale for 2 1/2 month from Australia Post's Philatelic Mail Order. They were not in the 2000 year book or released for general sale over the counter at Australia's Post Offices.

We have had these stamps up for sale for over 2 years now and have sold 16 of them. We still have a number of them and the sheet image is our own and still intact. We are in no hurry to sell them.

KGV Coll, it is a very nice stamp and two nice looking girls on it. But what is the story behind this. It is unusual to issue a stamp with a postal worker's passport picture on it instead of the Queen?

This stamp was first released in 1999 in the Greetings set. All the stamps have tabs. 5 x 45c stamps (which we just got 45 of each cancelled Bramble Bay) and the $1 Koala with greetings tab. I also think, that this set was the first of the personalised stamps?!

In 2000 the Government introduced a good and services tax and it did not include international post stamps. One of the letter rate stamps at the time was $1 and Australia Post did not have a stamp to issue for that mailing step. So it was decided that in the short term the 1999 $1 koala would be reprinted and overprinted international post. This is the only stamp to be overprinted with international post. And on the tab they choose to put postal worker Angela Thom image.

Yes I agree the Koala is a great looker as well.

Aren't these the same thing, just with a different personalized tab?

This one sold for £67!

Yes It sure is! And being used and on cover you are looking at one expensive item. Your stamp is included in the article.

It is the same size tab as I have shown and that is the 20mm tab the others are 16mm. Other than that I would have to reread the article or read the writers variation book.

Your stamp came from the personalized stamp mail order section.

I have been looking for a used example for over 10 years now with not even a bid on one.

I just looked at your 2nd link and it gives much detail but there is a typo. There is only 5 x 45c stamps issued in the 1999 greeting set and not 6 as the link says. There were 6 including the $1 koala.

Thanks for posting the links and image!
