When I bought that lot of Canadian classics last week, my dealer said that he had an accompanying batch of Canadian provinces that he hoped to get ready for me this week. I picked it up today.

Some neat stuff in the mix, including what look to be a few fakes or fantasies.

I don't know what you paid for this but that is an amazing find. There are likely dozens of varieties in the mix. The two 13 cent yellow Newfoundland schooners are really good stamps. Hard to buy. The mint versions usually sell for $40 plus; used copies somewhat less but still great stamps. Do any of the New Brunswick stamps have original gum or are they all MNG? There is a story behind these stamps which may have already been posted, but if not, I'd be happy to pass it along.

When you start disposing of those, keep me in mind.

I have done well with modern Canada, but I have very few of the classics and none of the provinces.

Do tell. The history of these types of things is always fascinating.

I'll have to sit down and go through the lot in depth to truly determine where I am with the lot financially. It cost a very low percentage of Scott overall, but that's to offset the faulty throughout. It only takes a few gems to make the lot... or a few key items being tattered to make it iffy.

There aren't really any high-catalog items upon which the profitability of the lot hinges on, which is a good thing... the downside being it may take a while to recoup the balance after pulling some examples to keep.

Question: with my specialty area, U.S. revenues, margin imprint captures and singles are in demand and command a premium. Is the same true of classic Canadian material? I see at least one capture and one margin imprint single in the lot.

Or are they just considered oddities?

I know that on the regular Canadian material, sometimes the scrollwork margin singles (sorry, I don't know the technical term) can sometimes be in demand.

3rd scan down 4th row - I was going to say I'll take the worse of the 2 as I need just that 1 but 1 is a forgery - possibly spiro or sperrati. Sperrati sometimes penciled initials or his name on some later in his career and his work can command more than the originals.
The margin imprint examples fetch a little bit of a premium - The lathework on admirals is where you were thinking of the high dollars for margins-
Alot of the provinces were sent over by ship and the saltwater had effects on the paper- There is a note about a color change on the paper of the last 4 rows of nfld and possibly others. I believe it turned the paper a pinkish hue - almost looks like they were soaked along with some red greeting crads. That may or my not be what NB was refering to.

No, my story is not the salt water story on the Newfoundland issue although I've heard that one before.

The New Brunswick Chalon issue was the last set in use in N.B. before it joined Confederation in 1867. I am assuming the stamps were replaced by the early Canadian issue; however, there was (apparently), a substantial stock of the stamps remaining which were stored in Saint John. During the great Saint John fire of 1877, the building where the remainders were stored was destroyed. A day or so after the fire, some kids were rummaging in the rubble and found a number of sheets of the stamps which had miraculously survived the fire. They were damaged but the kids took them home and soaked them in water and salvaged a lot of them. This is why today we see many New Brunswick stamps MNG but the gummed stamps are rare. This story comes on good authority but I can't say I've seen a reliable version of it anywhere. Whenever I see one of these stamps on cover, I'm bidding.

could always check all for stitch watermarks- maybe not all but majority fall into the period of possibilities. Actually any stamp issue from any country using mesh wove made paper has the possibilities of a stitch wmk just unitrade seems to point them out more. I've seen some great examples on early US issues. Now everyone go back and recheck all yur classics- This advertisement paid for by Ronsonol!!

Thought I would mention that I just noticed one of those Newfoundland 13 cent yellow "schooners" Listed on ebay for $24.95 (Buy-it-Now). Has cork cancel and is flawed - trimmed perfs and some missing perfs. I wouldn't buy it at that price but it gives you an idea of what at least one person thinks it is worth.
