I have a 10x magnifier but I need more magnification for seeing fine details such as identifying types on Washington stamps from the early part of the 20th century. I am considering a microscope but wondered if anyone had used one of these and what they thought:

My "guess" would be that you would find the "minimum" of 20x too powerful for analysis. If it were continuously adjustable from 5x to 40x, I'd say give it a try. It's certainly cheap enough. Does the image show up on your monitor screen? [I'm thinking - no?]

I would rather it be adjustable from a lower setting in increments up to the 20x this one starts at. The other one they sell starts at 60x so it is way too much.
My stamp room is nowhere near a computer so a stand alone microscope was appealing to me rather than have to run to the computer whenever I needed to take a closer look at something. Thanks for your reply.

I also wonder (now) if 3 batteries provide enough ambient light.

That is a very good point, My eyes aren't very good now and I require quite a bit of light when I use an ordinary magnifier. Thank You.

BradS - if you use it just to view it should work fine, however if you wish to capture an image, you will need one that can connect to a computer, via a USB port usually. Just something to reconsider before you buy one, as well as the cost of replacement batteries.

Thank you for your input John, I decided to order it. I will be interested to see how it works for me.
