I'll post some of my cancels later...a great resource and reference book that was published recently is The Philately of Third Reich Germany 1933-1945, written by collector and historian, Robert W. Jones.
A bit pricey..just under $100...shipping is way cheaper if you order thru Amazon and not the publisher..go figure!. My darling wife bought this book for me Xmas..glad she did

I posted this in another SCF thread, but it seems fitting to post it here as well.

As I scan my German postcards, I try to isolate and save any commemorative cancels I come across. Here are a few for show:

I got sidetracked from my France project and decided to see what I had in one of my German envelopes. Man, I hope this isn't another slippery slope for me. I'm really liking the old German stamps and cancels.

Here are a few I liked. Can anyone tell me anything about them?

Top and left look like comemmorative or event type cancels. Right side I think is just the common cds of the day, I just liked the centering on the pair. The other 2, no clue.

spain_1850,

As best I can tell, here's what you have.

Top one is from Nürnberg (Nuremberg) and was used in 1936-37. The CDS portion reads "Die Stadt der Reichsparteitage" (City of the Nazi Party Rallies). The cachet has the city name in large letters, then the same slogan again in Sütterlin script. It catalogs in Bochmann as Nürnberg #44.

On the bottom row, the first is a special cancel from Cammin (modern Kamie#324; Pomorski in Poland), 1936. It reads "Bischofsstadt / Sol - Jod - Moorbad / heilt / Rheuma - Skrofulose" (Bishop's City / Sun - Iodine - Mud baths / heals / Rheumatism - Tuberculosis). It catalogs in Bochmann as Cammin #2.

The second is a railway cancel (Bahnpost) from Hagen (Westfalen) - Betzdorf, train 25 (Zug 25). Possible date range for that stamp would be 1875-1891.

The third is a box cancel from Löwen, 1886. The text reads "Löwen in Schlesien" (Löwen in Silesia).

The last one is from Dresden, 1936. It appears to be a "ALTST. 5 c" cancel. I can't find any record of that cancel being used as late as 1936, but my literature on normal (not commemorative) postmarks is limited.

Postmaster GS
Can you please tell me which station my cover was mailed from?
I have been through the (very long) Wiki list of German stations and can't identify it.
It appears to be C**IRHEN-VER??, where * are not clear and ?? means there may or may not be other letters.
It was mailed on 10/01/1890 on Zug (Train) 9, and has a Manchester (UK) CDS on the reverse showing it was received the next day, 11/01/1890. Another question - was this 24 hour delivery from Germany to Manchester normal in those days? Seems we haven't progressed at all in that regard in 123 years.
Thanks in advance, any info would be appreciated.

Hi David,

The railway postmark says "CÖLN (RHEIN) - VERVIERS", i.e. Cologne (or "Köln" in the current German spelling) to Verviers in Belgium.

There were other other towns called "CÖLN" so this one is distinguished by being the one on the river Rhine.

It was mailed on Train 9 of the line going from Cöln (Cologne), Germany, to Verviers, Belgium. The outer ring of the cancel reads "CÖLN (RHEIN)-VERVIERS".

One-day delivery is quick, but not unheard of. It's not far from Verkiers to Antwerp, so the cover could have easily made it to the UK within a day. Also, the mail service was a lot better back when mail had a much higher priority than it does today. At that time, Germany had multiple deliveries a day. Perhaps the UK did too.

Here are a couple more nice German cancels on postcards.

First is possibly a postal service special cancel judging by the post-horn.
Postmaster - do you know what this one is? I can't make out the first word under the car!

Next is the Winter Olypmpics 1936.

David,

First one is a cachet used from 1927-1929. It reads "Im Postkraftwagen in die / Sächsische Schweiz" (In the post cars of Saxon Switzerland). Catalogs in Bochmann as Serienstempel #68.

The second is a cancel from Garmisch-Partenkirchen used from 1933-1936. It catalogs in Bochmann as Garmish-Partenkirchen #1.
