I have an old cover that I wanted to display and I've found this clear photo holder in one of those Dollar stores. The cover fits within its borders and there is also space underneath for a description. My concern is the possible effects of any acid from the plastic doing harm to the cover. Any suggestions? Or is it a bad idea altogether?
Thanks
Grover

Walmarts sells Acid Free, PVC Free, Archive Safe sheets right by one of the cash Registers. 50 in a package for about $5 I have used them for Sheets of Stamps for three years and found no problems with them. I do keep an eye on them occasionally. The plastic you have the First Day Cover in is flirting with danger. Heat and Humidity are the biggest enemies and there is a chemical reaction with plastic. The envelope I'm afraid will discolor. Sun also is a deadly combination.

You can put the cover in a clear archival collector's bag first, and then put it into the display.

Also, wherever you choose to display it, make sure it will never be exposed to direct sunlight.

Hi Grover,

Personally, I wouldn't do this. Maybe consider making a high resolution scan of the cover and making a print of it on a similar blank envelope, then displaying that.

Yes, I like the idea of making high-res photocopies for display purposes. The average admirer won't have a clue that it's not an original.

That said... If you really wanted to see your original in the display, you could put it in an oversize stamp mount, and put that in a larger plastic display thing. The oversize mount would accommodate different size items, and the mounts with black background would give it a matted look.

It all depends where you want to display this. If its in your home office so you can see it then go with the extra protection mentioned and keep it away from direct sunlight. If its for the workplace or somewhere else public I'd also recommend a digital copy since no one would know better plus with the technology available today you could get a very nice print.

scanners are so good today you cannot tell the scanned copy from the original.
