Hi All

I am just wondering if any member can give me an idea what the value of these two cards would be?

The back of the card of the first scan is blank but with Japanese handwriting. I just want an idea of their value when I get a trade.

Thanks a lot

according to the 2011 Sakura catalog the top card is PC14 150 yen used, I'm not able to read japanese enough to know to find a listing for the red card.

The second is a formula card applying for marine cargo insurance to the Nippon Kairiku Hoken KK (Japan Land and Sea Insurance Co.), apparently dated 1897.

Thanks all for your help.

Can anyone put a ballpark figure $$-wise on their value - just an approximate would be fine.

If my rusty Japanese is correct, I believe the red postcard is one half of PC13. As a used single, it's not priced in Sakura, but it is priced in the JSCA (Japan Specialized) at 300 yen, whether it's the outgoing card or the reply.

Although I collect Japan, I'm not very comfortable pricing used postal stationery, but I don't think there's anything here that would warrant some sort of premium over the generic value. So, ballpark, I would say $0.75-$1.00 for the first one, and $1.50 or so for the second. I'm sorry it's not more. And I'm always willing to be corrected by someone who knows more.

Wish I could be more helpful,

-- Dave

Thanks for that Dave. At least I now know what in return I can ask for them. My one hope was that the cancellation on the form was a special one, but, I guess it isn't.

Bujutsu -- I just went back and downloaded the image of that card, rotating the image 90 degrees counterclockwise so that I could read that red cancel rightside up. It more-or-less confirms for me what I thought before. That strike is, I think, a non-postal one. It looks instead to me like something applied by a company, something either for their internal purposes or something similar. I can't read Japanese well, and this is old Japanese, but I'm pretty sure there's no date on it. Tonymac could probably shed a little more light on it, and it may have informed his post earlier up this thread.

There is always the possibility that I'm wrong, and there are a couple of semi-regular visitors to this board who know a lot more about this than I do, so if you're not in a rush to do something with these cards, you can pursue it a little further. (I believe member "Prahanoaki" is a native Japanese speaker, for instance.)

Another route to trying to extract the maximum possible value of it is to offer it on ebay with as many relevant keywords as possible, including the name of the company. There is always the possibility that this is an elusive propriety cancel -- you just never know.

Again, I wish this were an area I knew better and on which I could offer a more authoritative opinion to give you more confidence in your valuation.

Keep us updated in anything more about it, in case you learn more about it off-thread,

-- Dave

Thanks for this Dave

I am not really in a rush to trade anyway.

I will wait and see what comes up.

The large oval red seal on the front isn't postal. It belongs to Settsu Boseki KK (Settsu Spinning Co. Ltd) - the company appears to have disappeared in a merger in 1918.

The small red seals elsewhere are simply personal seals.

I bought some more Japanese postal stationery yesterday at a stamp show I attended and came across some nice material. However, this one card is baffling. I have enhanced the cancel etc. The back of this card makes me think it is a pricelist of some sort for maybe sea food??

Interesting at any rate.
