Pictured is the Bratislava Philatelic Exhibition Souvenir Sheet with the Sudetenland Aufdrucktype III 3rd Reich overprint.

If I read the Michel catalogue correctly, this is a Sudetenland Bl.1

I realize how tough it is to determine the validity of an item from a photograph, but am looking for opinions anyways.

1) does anyone have a picture of a certified block I can compare this one to?
2) Does this look legit, and worthy of sending in for certification, or a forgery (my guess is forgery).
3) What is the history behind the Sudetenland overprints?

Thanks!

Brian

Here's a scan of the Aufdrucktype III overprint from Michel. It looks quite different to me ...

Pretty sure it's a forgery. The most common of the fraudulent Karlsbad overprints is missing the period after the X.

Here's a photo from an old Heinrich Köhler auction of a genuine sheet with one overprint inverted.

The numerals 3 & 8 are totally different from the examples. I wish I had one to compare.

As to the story behind the overprints...

As it became apparent that the Sudetenland was going to be ceded to Germany at the Munich Conference, Czech troops abandoned several German speaking areas before the Munich Agreement was signed (29-30 September 1939). As a result, the Sudeten German Party began issuing its own postage stamps beginning on 21 September in Asch and Rumburg.

On 1 October 1938, the Sudetenland was formally ceded to Germany. Until sufficient supplies of German stamps arrived, several solutions to the postage shortage were implemented. In some areas, Czech stamps were used unchanged. In other areas, the Sudeten German Party sold surcharged Czech stamps at the post offices. The use of Czech stamps with and without surcharges ended at the latest with a notice from the OPD Dresden on 20 October 1938. After that, only German stamps were valid for postage.

Besides the official issues, there exist so-called "Sudeten German Commemoration Overprints" and "Liberation Overprints" that were made in several towns, but which were not valid postage.

Thanks for the replies. I bought this knowing full well the seller would take it back if it weren't authentic. Worth my time to learn more about these!
