I just received a cover with these stamps on it.

I am wondering:

1 - Some of the stamps are only denominated in French Francs. Would they still be good for postage?

2 - The Saint Nicholas semipostals are denominated in Euros and Francs. They were printed in 2001 it seems, long after the French adopted the Euro. Why print values in two denominations?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I do not know if you can still use stamps with French Francs denomination, but the double denomination type is rather common for all countries that adopted the euro in the period before the actual change in 2002. The idea was that the public could get used to the new nominal value. Apart from that it made it possible that not all stamps needed replacement at Jan. 1st 2002...
Over here in the Netherlands it is still possible to use old guilder-stamps issued between 1977 and 2002, but in a rather controversial move the Postal Service decided to declare all guilder stamps invalid per Nov. 1st 2013.

I'm afraid this is not true. Euro was first used on January 1st 2001.

The validity of European old currency stamps, depends on each country. As I know, French Franc and Belgian Franc stamps as still postaly valid. Spanish Peseta stamps are not valid for postage since late 2001. I'm not familiar with other Euro countries stamp regulations.

This link to another web page may be helpful. The fourth comment specifically addresses stamps from France. There are several other countries mentioned, too. An interesting read:

At the bottom of that web page it says it was last revised in 2000, so much could have changed since then.
