Most of us know that FDR had a huge stamp collection.
I just watched Hype Park-on-Hudson with Bill Murray as FDR. In the movie FDR's stamp collection is used to intice and seduce a young woman. In the film there are great close-ups of some stamps.
We don't often see stamps featured in movies, so I thought I'd share this.
The movie is pretty good, too.

floortrader, I'm sorry if I burst your bubble. At least you're among an elite group of enticers and seducers. Maybe FDR wasn't the "first" either.
Terrence, I'm confused. Did Spartacus collect stamps? Or does Kirk Douglas collect stamps?
Sometimes I "just don't get it"

You mean you would demean your stamps by using them in an attempt to get sex????????? That's the most immoral thing I ever heard of. :-)

Stamps1962 the movie is out on DVD. Being a retired librarian, I borrowed it from my public library in Wisconsin. I don't think the theatrical release ran very long.
The movie is really pretty good and Bill Murray does a great characterization of FDR.

philb your book looks interesting, I'll have to see if I can find a copy.
Some time ago I read Franklin D. Roosevelt: the Stamp Collecting President by Brian C. Bauer, which was an excellent history book that just dealt with his collecting and not politics.

Hi,
The influence of FDR on the Hobby was very strong and I've heard about it since I was a kid in the '50s. But where is the collection now? Are there pics or descriptions of it available?

MOBILMAN------I think it went up for auction thru H.R.Harmers and sold more for the name than for the value of the stamps ,one of the buyers were selling the cheap stamps mounted on a certificate for huge profits over the stamp value. Some of the stuff that came from the U.S.PostOffice went for big dollars but overall most was cheap material.

mobilman the Bauer book said that FDR had over a million stamps, but that included everything he ever got, no matter value. I think the cool thing is that when he started as a child there were a lost less stamps! I have a very old WW Imperial stamp album and it has about 100 pages.

floortrader you're correct about the auction. Again, I believe that Bauer stated that it net about $600,000, not nearly what was expected. Still that was a lot of money then.

philb the book you have appears to be out of print and "rare", but I will continue looking!

All the items were handstamped that they were authenticated and came from the Roosevelt collection; there are some on ebay now. He also autographed the selvedge of sheets of common stamps from time to time, these were framed and sold as well with a label on the back.

Hi Kathey,
It was a reference to FDR, then floortrader, then me, all claiming to be the first. Have a look at this clip.
