Scott pooh-poohs the red overprints on Ecuador Officials from 1886 ("believed to be speculative"). Yvert says that overprints are either black or red, without differentiating between them. I believe Minkus listed them, though I can't verify it.

This would otherwise be Sc#O2.

Thoughts? The real story?

Thanks.

Hi Cjd

Yes, Minkus did list them. I cannot comment on whether they are speculative or not but only have to assume Scott is correct. I have the Banco Central albums that depict all Ecuador stamps in color (use them as reference) and they are not shown. Thus leading one to believe that maybe they were speculative.

Stanley Gibbons Part 20 (South America)
also lists them as O20 - O25

I believe Michel also lists them but my German is pretty much nil and cannot confirm this.

Michel lists the black variety, but a footnote explains that overprints exists also in red and purple; the latter being not officially recognized.

Thanks to you both. I guess I go with Scott's opinion on this. (But they can still find a place with my Ecuador.)
