The message is as follows: "To the imperial navy's administrator, Mr. Block Esq., Kiel In reply to your greetings directed to Tsintau, which unfortunately only reached us here, we wish you, albeit delayed, a happy new year."
I cannot read the signature of the person who sent this letter.
Cannot comment on the rarity or the ship carrying the letter either.

As with the previous card (MSP 38), this one is not particularly rare, but not extremely common either. For information on the cruiser, Wikipedia's probably your best bet in English. |

You will be pleased to know, Joseph, that the first words of the message are "Hong Kong, den 24./ 12. 1898" so it originated in Hong Kong. I particularly like the way Mr. Block is described... "Hochwohlgeboren". Wonderful...they don't write that these days If you need more, just mention it. |

There are a couple uses of this card that bring significanty higher prices. Among those are the cards posted while in Manila, 1898.
At the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, five warships of the German East Asia Squadron (SMS Kaiser, SMS Irene, SMS Cormoran, SMS Kaiserin Augusta, SMS Prinzess Wilhelm) were sent to Manila. They antagonized the Americans by frequently interfering with the blockade, and Admiral Dewey went so far as to threaten war with Germany over their interference.
Cards posted from those five warships during their time in Manila frequently bring 3-5x the selling price of normal MSP uses. |

About Jan-Simon translation: Quote: "To the imperial navy's administrator, Mr. Block Esq., Kiel In reply to your greetings directed to Tsintau, which unfortunately only reached us here, we wish you, albeit delayed, a happy new year."
I found this German postcard of Tsintau (Tsingtau-Kiautschou) 1902 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/F...nie_1902.jpg |

I find it interesting because this card and the previous one were both sent on the same day dec., 24 from 2 different cruisers both in hong kong. |

The price was US dollars. I'm still working on the signature but... looking at the name on the $375 postcard, it MIGHT just be the same name as SENT yours which MIGHT mean it is of equal importance. I THINK I can see your sender's name ending in TSCKE but it needs more work. Perhaps Jan-Simon can assist as a reader of Sütterlin. http://www.dererstezug.com/Suetterlin.htm |

The Manila card is more valuable not because of the sender or recipient, but because of the location and time -- Manila during the Spanish-American War. |

While not disputing Jan-Simon's effort...I have come up with this one.
Address side:
An den Kaiserlichen Marine Zahlmeister Herrn Block Hochwohlgeboren Kiel Holtenauerstraße
To The Imperial Navy Paymaster Honourable Mr. Block Kiel Holtenauerstrasse
Message side:
HongKong den 24./12. 1898 Zur Erwiderung Deines nach Tsintau gerichteten Grußes, welcher uns leider noch hier erreicht hat, wünschen wir Dir noch verspätet ein glückliches Neues Jahr.
In reply to your Tsintau directed greetings which reached us still here (HongKong he means), we wish you, still, a belated Happy New Year
Brief ist ebenfalls an Dich abgegangen (a letter has also been sent)
Signature : M...isck ?? pp Carl |
