greenlant408....I said before in the "other" post I was finished....
You are not the 1st person that inherited a stamp collection....was told valuable....and is not.
SORRY....but someone has to tell you. I think this was stated before to you.
I asked you to name the dealers who sold items to your family...you never replied, but from other posts seems like Mystic.
The reason is....names....Mystic - junk, over priced....Steve Crippe - Graded items, high quality....about as far apart as you can get. If items we purchased from Steve Crippe....there would be a line outside your door to purchase....Mystic on the other had.....a hobby, enjoy it! Expect NO profit, brake even, etc....fill the spaces kind of collection.
The items you stated are NOT valuable.
Find a dealer in Virginia,.....bring it to him....accept his 1st offer. No headaches or more disappointment.
These posts are NOT making your stamps more valuable.....Now Im finished. Please accept this advice...GOOD LUCK.

I never planned them to be an overnight sensation. I knew nothing, know very little now but a least enough to look through what I have. I'm not looking to be an instant millionaire maybe just be able to sell a few to help out. So I need grades and certs for them, ok. Will work on that.

Any amount I get is better than nothing. I didn't buy them so anything is a profit right? Why is everyone out for blood? You all have educated a person that knew nothing but at the same time cut my head off when I try to find out if anything at all I have is good.

Not to mention I have let you all know of a new place that is trying their hand at selling stamps for people that seems to be not so good. At least if their name comes up you can give others a heads up.

What Kevin is politely trying to tell you is that your items are not worth spending the Money on to get certified and graded. Sell as is and take what you can get.

I think I missed other threads. However, I'm waiting to see what shows. Might be nice stuff that I haven't seen before or a mixture. Who knows?

No harm in trying to get the flavour of our community here before diving in showing everything, so to speak.

I took a few years of reading and researching on my own before I could be comfortable here and with looking for and at stamps and researching on my own and also asking for help anywhere.

One way to see what is wanted is to look on ebay and search by highest price, although some folks there do ask fast and furious prices. Or just look through US stamps and see what is being bid upon or look at Completed Listings and see what has sold (sometimes now in the last seconds).

There is always sometimg to learn and be amazed by.

how do I know if the entire collection is worthless? solve every mystery within the first ten pages?

so if I don't get them graded where should I take them to sell as a collection? guess the auction houses are out....

Do the following:

1. Buy a Scott Specialized US catalog and learn about your collection or otherwise just sell to the dealer that offers the best price.
2. Post images of stamps here when you have them, to clarify what you can't understand from the catalog or to get opinions before you decide to sell.
3. Look for similar stamps on ebay to get a feel for real pricing.

I recommend you continue this conversation only after you have images to post or questions about things you don't understand in the catalog. If you can't get through either step 1 or 2, then we can't be any more help.

He may or may not have some value in the Colombian proofs. Scott # 230P through 245P. Depending on what he has these can go well into the 10K plus value. With this set alone it is worth at least talking to an auction house.

I can nit pick that I didn't see them but if he is telling the truth then he perhaps has some value in some of the stamps.

It makes no difference to me but certainly worth exploring this series.

I saw a 245P that listed for $12,500 but sold at auction for $4,500.

Like I said prior I am not that educated in proofs but this series is not what I would call common every day stamps even with them being proofs.

If you in fact have proofs and they appear to be in excellent condition what would it hurt to talk to an auction house. I certainly would love to see photos of the series as proofs.

mkfarm....the proofs are not what you are thinking....he has either 230P3 or P4 to 245P3 P4.
Values range from 230P4....$25 to 245P4 $225....Scott cv! P3s...slightly more.
He does not have die proofs.
Where did you see the 245P listed/sold???

Copied from some website I found to put it in layman's terms.

Proofs come in two forms, die proofs and plate proofs. Both are for issued stamps. A die proof is an imprint of the die block itself. A plate proof is an imprint of the full printing plate. Sometimes you'll hear the terms "small die proof" or "large die proof". That has nothing to do with the die itself. It relates to the size of the paper that the proof was printed on. These proofs are in the same color as the issued stamps, or in a color very close to the issued color. Printers prepared these for the USPOD to examine and approve them before going to the printing press.

so what is better to have? If the proofs came before the printed series does that mean proofs are less in quantity?
