Two new hometown covers from today. These are the sellers images but they're not too bad? I have only ever heard of this family and know nothing about them but I would very curious to know? Cover #1.Mrs. Miss. Rachel E. Martin, Jersey Shore, Lycoming County, Pa. With a Lebanon, Pa. July 29 1862 cancel.  Cover #2.Mrs. Miss. Sarah R. Martin, Jersey Shore, Lycoming County, Pa. with a Hamburg, Pa. October 14th 1861-63? cancel (probably 1862)  |

Nice, I never heard of Hamburg, PA before. I wonder if still exists with that name. I'm sure it would be easy to fine out, though. |

They're just so difficult to find. You know covers that old from one little town that pretty much looks like an ink spot on the map. I do have a few good people who keep their eyes open for these and let me know if they find any and, of course I reciprocate. Good friends to have right there! |

Well after a few mind numbing hours of trying to find out anything on these Martin's I only came up with some possible family information from the late 1820's to the mid 1830's in old newspapers. It would seem I failed miserably. :(

Administrator's Sale – On Saturday the 12th day of March next at the house lately occupied by Thomas MARTIN, dec'd, in Jersey Shore Borough, a tract of land containing 75 acres, bounded by the high-way on the east, by land of John SCHLONECKER on the south, on the west by land of Isaac BODINE and M. ADAMS, and on the north by land of Richard WEBB. It being the land late the property of said Thomas MARTIN, dec'd. on which are erected two log dwelling houses and a frame barn and about fifty acres of improved land. Sale to commence at 10 o'clock AM of said day. Richard & Lewis MARTIN.
The Cold – For a few days past the weather has been extremely cold. On Monday morning last, the mercury stood at 18 degrees below zero in this Borough.
*25 April 1832
Jospeh M. MARTIN, Esq., died on Tuesday evening, the 17th inst., in Clearfield-Town, of a severe and protracted attack of bilious fever, a worthy and useful member of the Clearfield Bar, aged about 31 years.

This is probably referring to the Rachel E. Martin shown on one of the above covers, having been a school teacher and participant in the Seventh Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania State Teachers Association on August 2, 1859 in West Chester, PA:  There are pages of "Minutes" of the various meetings of that Association (some interesting parts, but most very boring). Okay...here's a little bit more in terms of a 1860 Census for Jersey Shore, PA showing that the family consisted of: James Martin (father), Laborer, age 69, suggesting his DOB was 1791. Rachel Martin (mother), age 59, suggesting her DOB was 1801. Sarah R. Martin (daughter), age 29, suggesting her DOB was 1831. Rachel E. Martin (daughter), Teacher, age 24, suggesting her DOB was 1836.  |

Thank you wt1. I really appreciate your hard work! I actually seen that too but here is my preponderance..The stamps are 1861-1863 issues. That's why I just sort of backed off for a bit. I was really digging too but got frustrated. I think what I'll have to do is go to the Lycoming Co. Hall of records and the library and do some digging on this Family. I believe I know where the Martin house is in Town so that will help me out a bit.
Edit: That one you showed is 1860 correct? By George I think you got it! That's the lead I needed.. Man-o-live I'm glad I looked at that a little closer! You probably ran across the earlier ones I was wading through.
I went to school with a Michelle Martin so the family still resides in Jersey Shore to this day. |

For being one of a small hand full of prominent families from J.S. Pa. it certainly is hard finding any definitive & concrete information on them! This is the house in which Rachel was likely born and raised in. I have found that this is indeed the same Martin family as told to me by Wayne O. Welshans (author of the history of Jersey Shore, Pa.) but I just can't seem to dig up that one critical document that links the H.H. Martin to either Rachel or Sarah but it's the same family and in the same time frame but 2 properties. There is one that's right in Jersey Shore (shown below) and another farm just a few miles (abt.3) just N.W. of town up Nice's Hollow. Time will tell.  |
