Coil stamps can be identified by the flat edges on the top/bottom perfs, yes? I was wondering about those ... and that makes sense (spoiled by the US coils I suppose).

Also @pjstamps, I can't make out from your scan which you have, but you have 7 varieties of the 2p green ... Robin Harris lists, I think, 29 different varieties. Which varieties are generally collected? 29 seems extreme, but 7 or so is reasonable. Thanks.

I just go by the ones in Scott's. They only recognize a little over 750 varieties instead of the thousands that SG recognizes. That's a more realistic goal for me.
Here is a list of the ones I am missing or I am having a tough time identifying;
MH42,43,44,45,46,54,62,77,81,103,105,108,119,121,127,131,140,147,148,150,157,158 &170.
Northern Ireland'NIMH4,22,25,32,37,43,44,47,48,50,54,55,61,62,64,70,74,81&91.
That's all the further I have gotten. I just started putting them in an album last month. I have my accumulation sorted in four large shoe boxes. They are not all identified by type and number. So far they are just sorted by color and denomination. I may very well have some of the ones I am missing, but like I stated before, some varieties are much more difficult for me to determine than others. I of course started with the easy ones.

That is correct. The 25p above is a horizontal coil. Vertical coils have the cuts on the left and right sides. Stamps with cuts on only one side or two adjacent sides are from booklets.

so this would be a booklet stamp? Flat perfs on right and bottom ... also a question. On the Harris site he describes booklet stamps using DP1 DP3 DP7 etc. I've looked a bit, but can't find what this refers to ... ? Thanks in advance.

That is a booklet stamp. The DP numbers are numbers assigned to booklet panes by the Modern British Philatelic Circle. Here is their website: http://www.mbp-circle.co.uk/

The 1/2p stamp you show could be from the lower right position in DP1, DP3, DP7, DP11 or, possibly, others.

Advanced information regarding Machins is contained in the Complete Deegam Machin Handbook. Here is the website: http://www.deegam.com/
