Ive noticed short wave and long wave UV lights for looking for tagging on stamps.... You can also get a combo light with both waves in one...

Are both wave lengths necessary? Or does just one kind work for stamps specifically? is one better than the other?

Thanks.

Short wave works best with Winnipeg tagging and British Machin phosphor bars. Long wave is more useful when dealing with Canadian tagging (other than Winnipeg) and paper fluorescence.

So getting the combination light would be best for all stamps then? Canada and worldwide?

Here in the States I use short wave UV to detect tagging on my ( US ) coil stamps and long wave UV to check on paper types, high brite papers etc.

Can long wave tell paper types of the early US banknotes?

going to bump this thread...

does anyone have a recommendation for a UV detector/lamp? I am starting to mount my Canadian stamps in Steiner album pages and a majority of the post WWII stamps have a tagged and untagged identification.

Knuppster59, I have used a UV lamp for years and love my little lamp that fits in my pocket. It is sold by lots of places under different names, but the cheapest one seems to be from www.uvtools.com. It comes with a short wave UV lamp installed, and mine came with a loose long wave lamp at no additional cost.

Thanks for the link Peter. Looks to be one that does short and long wave for about $45 which is budget friendly for me.
