Hello,

I have two questions. I hope somebody can help.
The right stamp has a different 5 of the 75c. Is this common?
The left stamp has different shadow parts then the right. How can this be when they were printed at the same time?

Thanks,

Maarten

Hi Maarten, and "welkom" to the forum! I wished I could answer your question, but I am not at all familiar with French stamps. I do like plate faults though! Is it possible to give us a bit bigger picture; it is hard to see the 5's. Peter

Welcome to the forum Maarten

As far as the 'shadow' goes around the arm area, I can only offer the possibility that the sheet was shifted at the time of printing??

As far as the different "5" is concerned, I can't see that much of a difference by your scan(?)

Hi,

Here is a better picture. On top on the left side of the 5 you see a bumb. Its a little thing but still nice:-)

Much better, Maarten. I can see what you are talking about. From looking at the enlargement it seems that the left stamp had more ink applied. Of course that could be the scan?

One stamp is probably from a replaced die (thus the slight difference in the 75c) and for some reason absorbs more or less ink than the other dies.

Perhaps the difference in the 5's (the extra top bump) is from a slip during carving or engraving the die or plate. Collectors who collect such plate flaws would be intersted.

I do not have a web site to give you for reference at this time.
