On 9-1 I posted about the value of Switz. 54; if it really was $500.00. Yesterday I talked with Steve Myers, an editor at Scott Publishing. My suspicion was confirmed: the value is $50.00. He told me some of the other values were wrong n the '13 catalog and they had done a major revision of that era of Swiss stamps. Anyone who has valued their Swiss stamps of that era with last couple of years of Scott catalogs should check with the '14 to get them correct.

I assume, as the old ad's used to say, that it's an 'ancient Chinese secret'

They discuss the process a bit in the 'preamble' section of the catalogs without any kind of specifics, so I'm quite sure they keep it to themselves. Given they don't actively sell stamps themselves, I would figure they likely look at dealer 'sell' sheets or any number of other sales records and 'guestimate' the value, otherwise just give it the italics treatment due to lack of evidence.. and anything else gets the minimum.

One thing for certain... nothings for certain where Scott catalog values are concerned
