Hi,
I've got two Egyptian stamps overprinted with "Palestine". They are the orange/red 2 m airmail C39, and the orange red 2m postage due J30. From what I can tell, both overprints were made in 1948.

I would guess these belong in the Egypt section of the album, but I'm not certain.

Anyone out there know for sure ?

Thank you,
Mobilman44

In Stanley Gibbons these are listed under Gaza. Check Gaza in your Scott.

From Leon Balian's "Stamps of Egypt":

British mandate for Palestine ended 10 May 1948. Egypt then took control of the town of Gaza along with a coastal territory on the Egyptian border. Egypt stamps overprinted 'Palestine' in Arabic and English were in use from 1948 to 1959. From then stamps with similar designs to these but with different colours, also overprinted 'Palestine' in both languages were used from 1960 to 1967.

A page heading of GAZA (Palestine) in your Egypt album for the period 1948 to 1967 would be the most accurate way to keep them.

Thank you! Unfortunately, the Scotts Big Blues don't have a section for Gaza, so I will have to improvise.

It was from the Egyptian occupation of Palestine (Gaza Strip) from 1948-1967. The Egyptians even made it all the way past Bethlehem in 1948 into the outskirts of Jerusalem (of which there are canceled Egyptian Palestine occupation Bethlehem covers) before being repelled. Also, from late 1956 to early 1957, there are Israeli postmarked and cached covers from its occupation of Gaza and the Sinai during the Suez Crisis which was before the Six Day War in 1967 until stamps were issued by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas in the Gaza Strip from the 1990's onward. In the Scott Intl. Big Blue albums, there are pages for Egyptian occupation of Palestine after the regular Egypt issues.

Climber Steve,
Thanks, I noticed that yesterday afternoon - and the three stamps found a home there.
