I found this tear-out amongst some nice NZ stamps, so, I am curious is this piece of the cover are also telling to us some interesting postal history's story? Someone who are collecting NZ will probably knows what is this, but I don't have idea...

Machines from Napier, with some extra due paid in Wellington?

The rectangles in the background are New Zealand Catalog B2 meter impressions put into use from 1916 to 1922 or thereabouts. I suspect the Wellington postal marking is a transit marking.

The catalog value of this specimen, printed in black, is $5.

Good morning all,
I recently acquired the surcharged New Zealand letter card, posted on March 23rd 1901, shown below. I know that from January 1st 1901 the letter rate from New Zealand was reduced to one penny, but can anyone tell me how long the surcharged letter cards (from one penny halfpenny down to one penny) were used for? Is this rare or not? Always hopeful!
Thanks in advance
DavidR

What an attractive item! The last year the Universal Penny Postage stamps were printed was 1909. The first KGV stamp was printed in 1915 with a denomination of 1/2 d. I suspect this reflected the increase in postage prices back up to 1.5d. The next highest denomination in the set is 1.5d, skipping the 1d postage rate entirely..

Thanks smauggie.
Another thing I was wondering about with this - on the front is inscribed 'via Frisco', seemingly by the writer of the card.
Would there have been a choice of passage back to England for this sort of mail? It took just over one month to get to Bedford (apparently via San Francisco on the western coast of the USA if the instruction was obeyed), would it have been very much longer going via India, which I assume would be the alternative route?
