Here is an old cover of Newfoundland #24a from St Johns to somewhere. I recently found this at a show from a dealer and nabbed it. The NSSC catalog lists very few cover usages and it came with a certificate.

I've a few questions, which I think I know the answers; but would welcome the SCF opinions (and any other comments).

Plus, I know we all love seeing images.

My questions are small oddities:

1. Where is the stamp addressed to? The handwriting is hard to read.

2. The quartered cork cancel tieing the stamp itself appears to have some letters in it. Has anybody seen cork cancels with lettering? Any guesses on what the word is? Note also in the lower right a fragment of what looks like a second cork cancel.

3. The other cancel is red and I have never seen this variety because (a) it spells out Newfoundland all the way and (b) it has the word "Paid" at the bottom of the circle...all in red.

Enjoy and comments welcome

The addressee's name appears to be:

Mr. Malcolm McNaly
Malagawatch, Cape Breton (Nova Scotia)

The postmark appears to be dated July 21, 1871 at St. Johns, Newfoundland.

As to the red St. Johns, Newfoundland "paid" postmark, the same postmark appears in this example, so it must have been common back in the day:

Cape Breton Nova Scotia--of course.

Thanks for the link to the other postmark--must be from the era. I have just not seen one this old.
