I discovered this unusual item in a load of German local stamps recently. Any ideas?

I can't help with the stamp ID (sorry!), but I would advise you to perhaps change your post title to include "German(y)", as we have a few Germany experts here, and the post title might catch their eye better

I also am not sure of the ID but the stamp/image is reversed...here it is 'mirrored'

I think that Bahn over-print might be reffering to the railroad? Here is a link to Linns which has a picture of a similar Prussian stamp.

It begs the question as why both the overprint and the design are reversed unless it's a forgery and the guy that made the die forgot to carve it in reverse perhaps? Just a thought on it as I certainly am no expert...not by a long shot! It is pretty cool though and would make do a double take.

It must be a Prussian stamp. It is very similar to their 1861-1865 "Coat of Arms" stamps. Also, I came on accross on some Prussian stamps (numeral values from 1866) which have been printed in reverse (I don't know why), similar to this one you have.

However, I am pretty sure that, at least, you know the country of the origin now - it is Prussia, German States, similar design to the Scott #16.
