I bought a lot of stamps last week. Inside one of the stock folders was one of the wax envelopes with all of these stamps that I'm posting. They all would seem to be from the 1800s if they were real, and it seems odd that they all came together if they were forgeries. I studied the Hanford's Pony Express (2 cents) a little and read of two types of forgeries. This didn't follow the weaker one, leaving the other type of forgery possible. Anyways, I'm not expecting much good news here, but just need to know for sure. As you'll see below the other types are Robison & Co (1 cent), Brainard & Co., Johnson's Box, A.M. Hinkley's Express (1 cent), Floyd's Penny Post, American Express Co. (2 cents), Westervelt's Post, Eagle City Post, Bouton's Dispatch (2 cents), and Boyd's City Express Post (2 cent)

By the way, these are not adhesive, just sheets that you can see the ink marks or the engravings from the other side. I didn't consider other measurements before I took the pictures.

99.9% probability that these are all reproductions.

They might be reproductions but still interesting. I like them.

Any indication as to what tips them off as forgeries. Was someone making them for fun? Were they sold as replicas in a store? It's just interesting to see the variety of obscure stamps included. And they were altogether indicating maybe they were acquired all together, yet probably bought as replicas because they weren't displayed prominently.

An old saying comes to mind. If it looks too good to be true, than it probably is. My vote is reprints, way too fresh looking to be over 100 years old.

Yes that is all too true.

If I need to scan these and post some better images I can. It's good to have these on the internet now at least so that others can see this.

I'll probably still post these on ebay. Whether or not I put forgery/repro in the title may depend on having some hard evidence. Either way I'll mention that I can't authenticate them in the description.

Good article, mostly. Thanks for passing it on.

So what I learned is that I now have to also compare my stamps with known forgeries from the 1800s! This is getting more complicating. I assume it is possible to reproduce the plates that they used for the forgeries or the originals, or maybe someone still has the plates. The paper does look fresh except for one.

My wishful thinking is that maybe they were preserved well. It still seems strange that they all came together. I do think they might be pre-1960s. I don't think any of the stamps in the collection were after the 1960s.

I see the fake Boutons selling (as fakes) for several bucks each. Still an interesting lot.

I went ahead and listed them individually on ebay. Thanks for the help everyone. I hope I don't find out later that they were worth much more than I sold them for. Of course in a consignment auction someone would try to sell them for $200 each.
