I just received a small lot of used stamps which I won and the seller had attached the stamps to black construction paper using what he called "removable" tape. I learned that he had done this himself prior to shipping them.

While the tape was clearly not regular scotch tape I was still apprehensive about removing the tape from the stamps. When I removed the stamps from the construction paper the tape did pull off black paper fibers with it.

These stamps are not very valuable and I will end up keeping them (a full refund was offered which was nice of the seller) but I was just so surprised to find out that the seller had done this himself. He has a lot of feedback and it is all positive which was one reason for pursuing the stamps.

Has anyone else experienced the use of 'removable' tape used for the shipping of stamps? I've bought old collections where adhesive tape was used in place of hinges but it was obvious that the original owner had mounted the stamps to the pages that way.

The seller did refund my purchase after I wrote to him of my displeasure, which was very good of him to do. I can see why he has all the positive feedback.

I am still puzzled by the use of the tape in the first place.

No, I have never seen that, but if I ever get any that way, I would never do business with that person again. The older I get the more picky I get.

Some years ago, I bought a beginner-intermediate collection of Latin America at auction; each country in its own folder. Whoever the original collector was had attached a fair number of stamps with adhesive dots, of the kind you find in stationary stores. Fortunately, most of the stamps had been mounted with regular hinges. And the dots did come off with soaking, except for a few. I always wonder, with so much information available "out there" for collectors, even before the internet era, why individuals did such things.

Hi,
This reminds me of my first venture into collecting, back in the mid '50s........... Yup, I didn't need no stinkin hinges, cause I had a bottle of mucilage!

Me too. There seems to be less time available for 'do overs'

As mentioned the seller did end up refunding my purchase and telling me I could keep the stamps. It was very kind of him to do so.

I doubt that I will be a repeat customer as his communication indicated that this was common practice for him even though he did not say it exactly.

lighter fluid. It handles most tape adhesives pretty well.
I prefer elmers glue to hold me stamps to their pages. Just kidding, but I do have a lot of stamps that were included in a Lot that were glued. might have to soak them for a month to get them free.
