Boy do I wish there were a definitive world revenue catalog. Does anyone out there have a possible catalog number for these (I am sure Scott does not do the Revenues) or approximate value. I know their condition is terrible but even as fillers I would like to know what they are and approximate value. Thanks as always to all out there for this tremendous site. It is a godsend for people that don't have a nearby stamp club to bounce questions around with! Thanks in advance - Jeff

Yours are from the 1913 issue of South African revenues.

A very similar design in a somewhat smaller format was issued later, starting in 1931. Here is a visual aid that includes a basic, definitive postage stamp for comparison.

The 1931 and following issues contain a tiny year under the neck of George. The earlier issue does not have a year incorporated into the design.

You have Barefoot 1, 2 and 9 (in order of value, or right to left in your scan). Not terribly high CV, and the condition is rough. These are not uncommon, so condition still matters quite a bit, in my mind (even though I give revenues more of a pass on condition than their postal cousins).

Thanks Colin, I saw you were on and was hoping you would reply. You are always in the know with this genre of stamps. Very helpful and you are right, they are rough, the farthest left probably being in the best shape once it gets soaked. Thanks for the catlalog numbers and the reply in general. Have a great holiday season - Jeff

You might have a guess from seeing the 6d, but the inks on some or all of this first series run in water...be extremely careful soaking, or consider leaving it on its backing.

The best catelogue available for South African Revenues is British Commonwealth Revenues by J. BAREFOOT. There is also a South AFrican dedicated publication by Sherwood.
