Scott 107 Horizontal Mark

Stanley Gibbons tells me that there is a version of the 1c yellow-green with a fine horizontal line. This is the 2c deep green, booklet, so I don't think it is the same thing. However, when flyspecking, I saw the small horizontal mark near the middle "A" of Canada, then another very small horizontal mark in the last "A". Lastly, I see a very small diagonal mark in the "N". Is this a known variety, or do I just need to dust off my glasses more often.

Most old Canadian booklets were horizontal in orientation whereas most old U.S. booklets were vertical in orientation. Thus, the straight edge positions for old Canadian booklets would have been horizontal top imperforate, horizontal top and vertical right imperforate, horizontal bottom imperforate, horizontal bottom and vertical right imperforate. The Admiral stamp above has vertical left imperforate so that it's probably a straight edge sheet stamp. Also, the grain of the paper differs between sheet stamps and some booklet stamps. For sheet stamps the wove paper grain is mostly vertical and for some booklet stamps the wove paper grain is mostly horizontal.

This may simply be a "pulled ink", quite common on this series. see following link on Ralph Trimble re-entry site

Looks like you could sell it on ebay for a premium...geez, $1400 for an ink pull!

JR1960 - I have seen stamps sell for high $ amounts advertised as re-entries, though they were actually ink pulls... It happens, knowledge is key.

The second A of CANADA's ink pull goes across the stamp to the King's hair.

These are neat. Makes me go look at any I have now and want more!

I had to resurrect this older thread since I got my new microscope. The ink pull, as noted by Puzzler, does tend to go much farther than other ink pulls I have seen. Plus, it seems to be perfectly horizontal and the same width the entire distance, which is also contrary to most ink pulls. It seems to start in the King's hair, at the arrow, and then proceed much further. Likewise, there is a similar line in the last A of Canada. Just another oddity.
