I believe these are scott No 53, but please correct me if I am wrong. The stamps are very similar but have slight diferences. The colouring on the framing is different. The design arround the center eagle is slightly different. The paper appears different. Can anyone explain what these diferences mean; what causes these differences; and do the differences effect the value?

I don't have a Scott catalogue, but isn't the #53 the 3R50 black & grey? Your stamps are the later 3R50 green & red. Check if your Scott has a #137 and #137b.

It's #137, issued in 1917, if Perf. 13 1/2 or 13 1/2x13 valued at 25 cents, or #137a if Perf. 12 1/2 which is 20 cents (Scott 2009). Scott makes no mention of variations in shade but Michel notes that there are variations. No mention of variation in design or paper though & I can't make out any differences from the scans, sorry.

Yes, 22crows is right, the earlier (1898) 3R50 black & grey is #53 if on Horizontally laid paper & #65 if on Vertically laid
