Hi folks, I just bought a stamp, the seller said its a Mauritius sc#5a,and has philatelic expert Georg Buhler name on back.what do you guys think,i saw another #5a with certificates.but the color looks so different with this one.
Some of your information could be wrong. I understood that the POST PAID one penny was not issued until May 1853. I've never seen one that color either.
Thanks pagoda. Does the orange color oxidized intentionally or it's naturally became that way ( copperish color) Does the oxidized stamp still valuable without brought back to original color?? Also I will post another Mauritius stamp tomorrow.
There is a hydrogen peroxide-based process that is used to reverse the color change process (which is apparently based on issues with sulfur, rather than oxidation, according to some old posts from khj).
If you search the SCF archives for "sulfur" you'll find many threads.
Not sure I'd have the nerve to try it myself on a scarce-ish stamp...
