Good evening ladies and gents, My name is James and I have a good friend trying to get a real appraisal on his stamp collection. I was wondering where I can get some help at and am hoping someone here may know a creditable source we can go to since my friend is looking to make some money off of his late fathers investment. I had taken some pictures of just some of his stamps, and from what I saw he has some very old good looking stamps fomr late 1800's and upward. Forgot to mention I believe all of his stamps are from other countries, I'm not sure if he has any U.S. stamps.
If you can get us some specifics of country and catalog number, or pictures, we can start looking at how to help you. We have some experts here, and a lot of otherwise smart people.
Stampy heres the way it usually works..if you take it to a stamp dealer he is going to tell you what he is willing to pay for the collection...if you take it to an appraiser..its going to cost $$$$$ per hour..disposing of a stamp collection and getting a halfway decent price is not easy.....thats something that we as stampcollectors know ...good luck to your friend...
My suggestion: Post the collection here, page by page. If anyone is interested in the stamps on those pages, let them make an offer on it. Maybe your friend could divest himself of some of them that way.
People here could identify the stamps and give you the latest Scott quote on them, but the way catalogue pricing works, you can usually expect anywhere from a third to a half of the prices because that is usually what a dealer will give you, and then only if he is really interested in the stamps in question.
I see your friend has them in an album grouped by year dates, so another suggestion would be for your friend to look up the pricing and then come to a conclusion as to how much he would want for the stamps, based on what he found out.
Your friend should join the board and then find out as much as he can about stamps and stamp collecting first, though, because you can only sell here after 50 posts -- we know a person better then.
From the pictures I see, there are some nice stamps, fairly uncommon, but not really all that rare, value-wise.
If your friend or his father is a member of the American Philatelic Society, they state that one of their benefits is to provide estate advice/assistance. I have not used the service nor do I know anyone who has but its a resource you might consider.
