I am not really a stamp guy but I do collect ephemera. On one of my documents (dated 1784) there are two tax stamps. I have looked up some information on these and I know that they are from the Stamp Act of 1765. Does anyone know anything else about them or if they have any value?

Thanks!

What you are showing is not actually the revenue stamp, but a cypher seal that was placed on the back, over the staple. Frankly, I find them more interesting than the embossed revenue stamps themselves. The revenue stamp probably includes a date.

I can't be certain about any specific range of years of use for yours, but it is King George III, and his (very long) reign included 1765, and the loss of the American colonies.

Thanks Cjd!

The embossed revenue stamps are still on the back. It seems that all of the old Vellum pieces that I just picked up have these... so I am assuming that they are fairly common. Do you know of any sites where I can find if they have any value?

No, I'm not aware of an online source for values. These are often found cut from the original documents, so I assume that having them complete adds value. Whether there are more, or fewer, collectors of the complete documents, I cannot say. I've been tempted by complete documents a few times, but I haven't been able to sort out the perceived storage and display headaches.

Governments have loved taxes for centuries, and anything worth documenting was probably worth taxing, as far as the crown was concerned, so as a general category, I don't think they are that rare.

Your particular examples may have additional interest, depending upon what the documents themselves are doing.

You've probably noticed the '3' (as in KG3) buried in the base of the crown, but I mention it for others who just glanced at your picture.
