Hi,

I have this old collection that's been out of sight for most of my life, I'm looking for advice of what to do with it, I do have some time to spare, but i've noticed in the last two days of looking.. it's not that easy to find values.

My grandfather's collection (link below) is mounted on loose sheets, he traveled a lot they are from all over the place many from the old British empire.

In the link are also photo's of my mums collection pages 1&2, they are post war.

I had a look at your GB stamps of the various kings plus a few QE2 and they are not worth anything. Anything damaged or torn are worthless. Mostly very very common GB stamps.

Yes thanx for the reply, I knew they were in bad condition, but it's the pre war stuff on loose pages I would like to know about.

I will delete the post war stuff to avoid confusion

I gave it a quick whirl, and besides few random items most appear worth few cents a piece.

Likely the China section is of the most interest (but still not worth much). There's a nice zeppelin postmark with 1930s Paraguyay stamp (but sadly the stamp itself appears to be a spacefiller).

Don't throw them away. You might be able to give them to children who want to start collecting or to wounded vets.

Hello Jimlad, welcome to Stamp Community.

Most of the stamps look to be a basic collection with a few nice looking ones in there.

I like cancels or postmarks and socked on the nose circular type ones make the stamp worth more. The Sudan camel stamp with The CDS (circular Date Stam) on it will be worth more than a regularily canceled one.

Topical or thematic stamps (airmarl, airplanes, birds, animals, knigs, queens, etc) can be worth more to those collectoras concentrating on that aspect or area of the hobby.

The Australia big side-faced King George V (5th) stamps (1 green and three red) may be scanned or photoed (best to scan) at a closer range to zoom in on details as some of thsoe (and many other engraved (carved) stamps have flaws and faults that make them worth more than regular stamps.

It all takes a learning of certain stamps which takes time but is rewarding in knokledge sorting and classifying and knowing you know how to see or sense a really good stamp that others may miss.

Or you can just collect or accumulate stamps by country or world or topic or a certain era or time period.

The Italian set of statues ( I think) are nice to have.

The Belgium railway parcel stamp with the circle cancel instead of the rectangular baggage-looking cancel is worth more.

Full sets are worth more than single stamps, except when the singles are the valuable ones.

Confusing, it can be, but fun learning and looking and searching and hunting.

The France Sower stamps. light pink coloured has a great cancel on it.

The condition of any stamp affects it's value. Well centered are worth more, mint with original, non-didturbed gum (not mounted to an album page) are worth more. Good colour, non-bemished paper, nice cancels and all kinds of other stuff affect value for the serious collector.

Watermarks can affect value a lot if sideways or upsidedown.
