Quote: he rules at the site state you must have 50 post to be eligible to bid. If you view the member forum @ the bottom of the page, usually 40 or so online with 300 lurkers...which is eliminating the 300 from buying. I posted the question why not allow ANYONE to buy? YES...must have minimum # of post to sell. Moderator stated...His board, his rules....thats why. And you're full of crap. That's NOT what was said. I explained clearly why it was that way. I don't appreciate you trying to make me look bad. |

People begged for a system with feedback. I paid a lot of money to have the system on the coin forum converted to use the database type here. Now people complain they don't like it.
Now people want post edit time limits and I'm leery to spend the money to do it. If I do it I'll be barraged with "Why can't I edit my post" emails and complaints on here.
I can never please everybody. |

I think any of us who are interested should make an effort to offer some items for sale. I like the idea of having to have some stability on the forum before selling or buying. Tom |

A relative newbie here, but hopefully my questions and comments haven't fallen too much into the inane pile. I must say that I found this forum via Google searches for some specific stamp information....consistently the most in-depth and knowledgable replies seemed to be posted on SCF. I have no interest in posting or replying to any "What's it Worth" questions <though some of the replies here have been amusing at the OP's expense...> I think a sticky about what resources to consult first would turn away most of the free sales advice crowd. I have not bothered with the Sales/Wanted area because I think the 50 post rule is a bit over the top....much longer a "trial period" than any other forum I have been a member of. If someone has made worthwhile posts over a period of 2 months it is obvious they have more interest than simply unloading their inherited album. I'll defer to the list owner though, if past events indicated such a high bar was necessary, then so be it. It will simply be further months before I ever participate in that section of the forum. P.S.- In case I didn't say it, I like this forum very much and give it a daily quick check....generally considerate members, valuable information and advice and to me a steady flow of intriguing topics. |

Anyone logged in can bid or buy now.
But let me be perfectly clear.
Stamp Community is NOT responsible for transactions gone wrong for ANY reason.
Good luck. |

I do understand what you said....and for the reason you gave. What I tried to relay was.... You are the moderator/owner of this site.... There are rules, yes, I and everyone understands.... Your rules were your rules....we had to obey them if we wanted to continue to post here....I apologise if anything was taken the wrong way. Kevin |

Bobby131313, judging by your posts and your title of Forum Dad, can I deduce that this is your website/forum?
If so, thank you! I appreciate this site and all the valuable information contained here, the helpful members and general awesomeness that is SCF.
Also, don't take anything said here as 'THAT'S HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE!' People will have issues no matter what the forum layout or operational type is available. Could things be better? Yes, things can always be improved upon and tweaked. You don't necessarily know exactly what the outcome will be though, so it's an at-risk venture.
Please view our comments (as long as they're not nasty and directly aimed at offending) as creative criticism, i.e. not designed to tell you whats good or bad, but a collection of ideas and suggestions on what might work to make things better. Of course, 'better' is in the eyes of the beholder so there's no way to please absolutely EVERYBODY here. You'll always have some displeased folks no matter which way you turn. Just ignore them. You're doing a great job here and the amount of posts and interest in this thread shows that the community is active.
In the end this is YOUR forum. You decide how things operate. If someone takes offense to that then they can move on. There should always be a level of respect shown to admins, operators and mods of any website. There's always room for disagreements (thats human nature) but there is no room for disrespect and disgraceful behavior. Disagreements can and should be discussed in a respectful manner by all sides.
Use our ideas or discard our ideas. Either way, I love this site and support whichever layout and functions you implement. |

WOW! This topic jumped up in pages big time since I last checked it. For the buy and sell area, I'm wondering if it was overkill doing it auction style. Is it safe to assume that initially it was just separate forums for Buy, Sell and Wanted and people would just post threads for their wares? This is typiclly what forums do if they have a Buy and Sell area. And if this is indeed what was done before, how active was that area? If it was more active before, maybe just go back to that? In my case, I would prefer to just post items I have up for sale while they are on ebay, then I can easily delete the posts if they sell on ebay or delete the auction if it sells directly to a forum member. Anyhow, just my two cents and there's definitely no pleasing everyone. I was actually impressed when I joined here that there was this cool auction system in place, but unfortunately not many people seem to use it. Dan |

little confused here. Yes I am a newbie, Is it still 50 posts to be a full member? I belong to many forums that are not stamp related. 10 posts is the usual member requirement.
I have learned over the years that listening and reading far outweighs speaking. Getting to 50 posts will not be seen by me with the remainder I have left on the planet.
This "Rule" (must have a good reason) possibly stifles newbies into intimidation. Just sayin.
About stamp value.. Human nature takes over when we talk money. I have worked in Real Estate for many years and my biggest obstacle when dealing with new clients is convincing them that THEIR home is NOT worth how much they think it is and the home they want to purchase IS worth more than they want to offer.
Same goes for my other hobby. Collector cars... Now is gets just plain crazy... stamps are simple compared to these..lol
I enjoy this forum. I wish I could easily get info about details. Watermarking??? some of the hidden secrets that stamps contain. I am not very interested in that stuff but a quick read would be nice. Flyspecking??? sheeesh.. I admire the folks who are into this stuff and have the time to do it. For me...never, it would drive me away from the hobby in ten minutes.
Just my 2 cents from a guy who looks at the picture (stamp) and decides if its nice or not. Please don't ban me. |

xyyz,
Your opinion nicely said; seriously doubt that anyone would want to ban you. Your input counts! Hooray, I just made 50 posts with this one but it's a moot point now. |

XYYZ - I agree with you - I admire the depth and study that people, and there are many here, who go into the deep intimate details of little flaws and oddities in stamps; but that was never what attracted me to the hobby. I am just a basic collector who enjoys all of the history, art, design, politics, back stories, geography, etc. of stamps. I could have strange rarities in my collection based on perfs and watermarks and tiny design flaws and would never know it.
But, that's the point - we all collect for our own reasons, but we support each other for the cause and the enjoyment of the hobby.
As per the complaints of the forum (buy, sell, boringness), I disagree. I always find interesting things here and hope to continue to do so. As long as the buy-sell rules are clear and make sense, whatever works is fine.
Making a change now and again is fine, as long as we all understand the changes.
And - as I think I stated earlier - if folks feel the site is "boring," then it is up to use to pose more interesting questions and topics that other collectors may find interesting.
Hope it all carries on - and thanks to administrators for keeping it going. |
