That stamp rocks! It really does look like a naked person standing at the edge of the falls. Very COOL! |

Interesting, but a stamp printed only in green can't have a brown plate flaw. This must be a small fragment of wood remaining in the paper. |

tonymacg is probably correct..If it is a wood fragment in the paper, it would be a "one off"...not considered a constant..That is probably why Unitrade does not recognize it in their catalogue...But a keeper for sure because I bet no one else has one...Nice stamp |

lorddenning...Take it easy on COINWATCHER..He is new to our forum and obviously has a passion for "flyspecking" as I do and many more here...He wants answers (and I am no expert by any means) to questions...I think he deserves the respect of everyone on this forum..Don't you agree..?? If in fact we come across not desirable people, we have the right through moderators to have them removed...I like to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. Quote:And for goodness sakes stop listing your worthless items on ebay for thousands of dollars. And that lorddenning is what me and you got in a little fight yesterday about ebay not reflecting what true prices of stamps are..see what I mean my friend... |

As a neutral party here, I feel I need to say that I perfectly understand lorddenning's frustrations in this.
There is nothing wrong with a novice asking legitimate questions and being enthusiastic about flyspecking. I very much enjoy looking for genuine varieties. But a stamp with a piece of brown on it, could be nothing more than a stain. Maybe wood, maybe glue, but certainly not ink or any kind of genuine variety. I have stamps with pieces of hair in the ink, or a thread; interesting yes, an oddity yes but I would never think of it in terms of monetary value. I might share it on the forum as something funny - "wonder if I did DNA on the hair, I could figure out who the printer was?"
However, just as an example, it has taken me many years of research, practice, reading relevant publications to understand many of the variations of varieties (re-entries, plate flaws, guidelines, tool marks, paper fluorescence, watermarks, and the list goes on.). Yes, I had to ask experts for guidance, but they pointed me in a direction and I moved on until I got stuck and felt I needed to ask something else.
It can be rather painful for those of us who have spent years building detailed knowledge to be asked questions by novices that have obviously not spent the time to learn about the topics that interest them. There are many, many good publications and websites that have information about varieties on Canadian stamps.
Please understand that I am NOT trying to discourage anyone. I just wanted to say that lorddenning is not alone in the frustration of seeing posts like this, that seem to inevitably end with "how much is it worth?" There are probably others that do not post that feel this way. (and yes, I followed the thread on "oddities" - it was far too personal, but was a very worthwhile discussion regardless).
The best solution to this IMO (so as not to discourage anyone from asking questions about anything in order to learn), is to have a specific category for these types of posts. The moderator maybe could come up with something. That way, those of us who wish to help the novice with these kinds of questions can do so in the right context. Those that do not wish to read these kinds of posts can then avoid that category. I'm sure there must be a way to find a compromise that everyone can be happy with and that won't discourage anyone.

As for me, it is comforting to know that these guys are out there keeping an eye on the blog and willing to share their knowledge. |

Quote: .I have put in a request to the moderators to have my post "Unitrade pricing oddities" removed. Wert, why would you want your post removed? (you mean thread I'm sure) First of all you might have initiated that thread but other members took part and posted also, therefore it is not your thread. I hope the moderators do not remove this whole thread. |

Coinwatcher, I compliment you on your ability to take close up pictures. They are very clear and helpful when looking to explain varieties.
Now that I look at your new scans, I seem to recall that I have seen this before (a green stamp with reddish anomalies). Perhaps caused by some chemical fluid on the printing plate (like a repellex error). I've seen something similar on more modern stamps as well (eg. 17c Parliament - green ink with dark spots). |

OK wert, now were buddies again. @3Dadeo, I thought that repellex errors could only occur during the offset/litho printing process which is surface printing. This stamp was recess engraved in one colour. To me the spots look like ketchup. |
