Please forgive my ignorance but I am very new to this.

I have found a stamp from the 1800's which was only used for a surcharge but hasn't been over printed with the surcharge. Does this make it rare or is this a common occurrence ?

Welcome rooneydog!

A scan of the stamp in question or information on the country of origin, SG or Scott number would help us assist you.

Just a little more info will be helpful. Sometimes there is another explanation, and sometimes a specialist catalogue will list "surcharge omitted" varieties.

Welcome.

Sorry it looks like it could of first been issued in 1876 as an overprinted Postage but this one hasn't been overprinted at all.

The 1p yellow without overprint is a revenue, according to Scott Classic.

So it has a "POSTAGE" overprint, but not the half penny and bar? If so, it would be SG82.

According to SG, the POSTAGE overprint should be 14.5mm long, with no stop.

edit: Missed the edit to your post...I'll leave this up for anyone who stumbles across this in the future looking for similar info.

I do not see the same revenue note in SG Commonwealth that Scott includes in the Classic. Maybe it is hiding somewhere.

The 1d yellow is #63 in the Forbin catalogue of revenues. The 6d rose is #64.

Both of those become postage stamps with overprints.
